The line graph illustrates the percentage of tourists to Scotland who visited four different attractions in Edinburgh between 1980 and 2010. Overall, it can be seen that, despite some fluctuation, over the period as a whole, the number of visitors rose in all four attractions.
The Festival and the Castle were the most popular attractions. They began at a fairly similar level of between 25% and 30% in 1980. However, while the number of visitors to the Festival increased gradually over the following years, the Festival then sharply fell over the period. Tourists visiting the Castle experienced a minimal decline to around 38%. Nevertheless, both attractions followed a similar trend, increasing steadily to 31% (Castle) and 25% (Festival).
The Zoo had a more erratic pattern of visitors compared to the other three attractions. It stood at 10% in 1980, which was lower than the Festival and Castle. It overtook the Aquarium in 1990, with visitors reaching 35%, but there was a sharp fall by 1985, when tourists hit a low of 9%.
