Overall, coffee exports from Brazil and Costa Rica increased over the period, whereas Colombia experienced marked fluctuations. Brazil recorded the highest figures for most years and ended the period as the leading exporter. In contrast, Colombia’s exports fell sharply in 2008 before recovering considerably by 2012.
Brazil exported around 12 million kilograms of coffee in 2002, and this figure rose steadily to approximately 15 million in 2006. It then increased more significantly, reaching 20 million kilograms in 2008. Although there was a slight decline to about 18 million in 2010, exports climbed to a peak of 25 million kilograms by the end of the period. Meanwhile, Costa Rica started at 15 million kilograms in 2002, the highest figure among the three countries, before experiencing a gradual decline to 7 million in 2006.
Colombia, by comparison, began with exports of only 5 million kilograms in 2002. After rising steadily to around 12 million in 2006, the figure dropped dramatically to just 2 million in 2008. However, exports recovered thereafter, reaching 8 million kilograms in 2010 and 15 million in 2012. In contrast, Costa Rica’s exports rebounded after 2006, increasing consistently to 12 million in 2008, 14 million in 2010, and finally 20 million kilograms in 2012.
