The line graph illustrates the projected number of elderly citizens in Germany, divided into three age groups, from 2020 to 2050.
Overall, the total population of people over 65 is expected to rise until the mid-2030s before showing a slight decline, while the oldest age group (over 80) will continue to grow steadily throughout the whole period.
In terms of increases, the population of German citizens aged over 65 will rise significantly from around 18 million in 2020 to a peak of about 24 million by 2035. A similar upward trend can be seen in the 65-79 age group, climbing from roughly 13 million in 2020 to 17 million in 2035. The most remarkable growth, however, is projected for people over 80, whose numbers will gradually increase from 6 million to around 10 million by 2050.
By contrast, after reaching their peak in 2035, both the total over-65 population and the 65-79 category will experience a decline. The figure for all citizens over 65 will fall slightly to around 22 million by 2050. Meanwhile, the 65-79 group will see a sharper drop, falling back to approximately 13 million, which is close to its initial level.
