The line graph illustrates the number of three types of crimes – armed robbery, assault and murder – in London between 2003 and 2012.
Overall, armed robbery saw a significant downward trend, while assault cases rose steadily over the given period. However, murder appeared to be less common and did not see any considerable fluctuations.
Regarding the most dramatic change, armed robbery started as the most common type of crime at approximately 3,400 cases in 2003 and reached a peak of around 3,700 in the following year. However, it experienced a dramatic decline by 2008, reaching its lowest point of around 1,000 crimes, and stabilised at roughly 1,500 by the end of the time period.
In contrast to robberies, assault witnessed a slight upward trend throughout the years. Starting at around 2,400 crimes, it had minor fluctuations, ending at around 2,700 cases by 2012. Meanwhile, murder, which occurred just over 500 times in 2003, experienced a slight surge to approximately 1,000 cases in 2005. However, it returned to the initial figure by 2012, with around 500 crimes.
