The line graph illustrates the proportion of people using mobile and fixed line phones in Africa from 1994 to 2004.
It is clear that the percentage of people using both mobile and fixed line phones in Africa increased over the period. The figure for mobile phones increased sharply during the period while the number of fixed-line users only grew slightly.
By 1994, the proportion of fixed line phone users was considerably higher, beginning at 1.7%, while this figure for mobile phones was only 0.06% in 1994. By 2000, although the proportion of people using both mobile and fixed line phones increased, this figure in fixed line phones was higher than that in mobile phones with 2.5% and 2%, respectively.
In 2001, both lines met at around 2.8%; after that, the proportion of mobile phone users continued to increase strongly, but the increase in fixed line phones was slower and more steady. Finally, in the last year of the period, the percentage of people using mobile phone reached a peak at 8.8%, almost 3 times more than this figure in fixed line phones.
