The chart illustrates the number of incidents of three different crimes such as car theft, house burglary and street robbery in England and Wales combined from 1970 to 2005.
Overall, it can be seen that car theft maintained the highest amount of offenses for the majority of the period. Noticeably, street robbery made up for the lowest cases compared to the three crimes throughout the years.
In 1970, the car crimes caused by thieves started at roughly 0.4 million before gradually increasing in the 20 years to 1 million. In the year 1990, this figure skyrocketed up to 1.6 million. As for house burglary, the number of cases hit a peak in 1980 at approximately 0.9 million, though steadily dropped to 0.7 million by 1995. Meanwhile, street robbery only took up 0.2 million cases in the 25 year period.
From 1995 onwards, both car theft and house burglary crimes had a downward trend from 1.6 and 1 million to 1 million and 0.4 million respectively in 2005. As for street robbery, there were about 0.2 million more cases by the end of the period.
