Overall, having experienced a negligible fluctuation in the initial years, there was a significant increase in the number of overseas who went to Japan.
In 2008, just below a 10 million foreigners chose Japan for their visit. Following years this pattern fluctuated slightly and in 2012 the period of gradual rise started during which time visitors number tripled, peaking at 30 million in 2018.
As for visiting by places, the share of China and Korea amounted to nearly a third (27% and 24% in turn), making them twice as popular as the number of Taiwan(15%) and Rest of Asian (13%) tourists.However, corresponding figures were seen in the segment of Hong Kong, Europe and North America, constituting to less than a tenth for each, whereas only 2% of overall tourists of Japan were from Oceania in 2018.
