The chart shows cinema attendance across different age groups between 1978 and 2008.
Overall, cinema visits declined among those aged 14 to 49 over the period, whereas attendance among people over 50 increased. Despite fluctuations, younger groups consistently visited cinemas more frequently than older ones.
In 1978, around half of adolescents and young adults went to the cinema, but this figure fell by roughly 20 percentage points in the following decade. A similar decline was observed among middle-aged adults. However, between 1988 and 1998 attendance rebounded, rising by about 20% across all age groups and reaching a peak of around 60% among teenagers. This level remained largely unchanged until 2003.
By contrast, in the final five years of the period, attendance among adolescents, young adults, and those aged 30 to 49 declined again, falling by approximately 10% in each group. In contrast, cinema attendance among people over 50 rose gradually, from about 30% in 1978 to just under 40% in 2008, making it the only group to record growth across the 30-year span.
