Overall the data depicts a notable increase in obesity rates across all the age groups during the specified timeframe. While the age group of 45 – 60 had the highest increase in obesity rates the youngest age group of 18 – 29 had the lowest increase in obesity rates.
In 1971, even though both the age groups of 45 – 64 and 65 – 74 belonged to the same percentile, they lead to some notable changes by the end of 2005. The 45 – 64 age group experienced a considerable spike in obesity rates from over a 15% percent in 1971 to around 40% in 2005. Meanwhile the 65 – 74 age group individuals who were also around 15% obese in the beginning experienced an initial increase up to around 37% till the year 1999 but then started show a slight decrease by the year 2005 to around 35%.
In contrast, the younger age groups exhibited lower rates of obesity in comparison to that of older age groups. While 30- 44 age group witnessed a surge starting from 15% in 1971 to around 35% in 2005, the youngest age group, exhibited a gradual rise in obesity starting at around 8% in 1971 to around 24% in 2005.
