The line graph illustrates the percentage of journeys made using four different types of transport in a particular country between 1985 and 2015.
Overall, while the proportions of travel by bus, rail and other means declined or remained relatively low, car travel showed the opposite trend and became the dominant mode of transport despite a slight decrease at the beginning of the period.
In 1985, bus travel accounted for the highest proportion, at just under 60%. By contrast, the figure for car use was slightly above 20%, while rail and other forms of transport recorded the lowest percentages, both remaining below 20%.
By 2000, the proportion of car travel had risen sharply to nearly 80%, becoming the most popular transport mode. Meanwhile, bus usage fell dramatically to below 20%, and the figures for rail and other transport fluctuated at similarly low levels. In 2015, car travel remained dominant, although it declined slightly, while rail use increased noticeably to around 20%. Bus and other transport continued to account for much smaller proportions.
