Overall, while the percentage of Australian exports to China and India had an upward trend, the figure for the US and Japan decreased throughout the period. In addition, the proportion of Australian goods exported to China experienced the most significant change compared to the other countries.
Regarding China and India, the share of Australian exports to these countries increased. In 1990, the figure for China was the second-lowest among all, at only around 2%, which was 1% higher than that of India. However, it then soared significantly, surpassing the figure for the US and Japan before reaching the highest level in 2012, at approximately 27%. Similarly, after remaining unchanged in the first ten years, the percentage of Australian exports to India then went up steadily to over 7% in 2010 before falling slightly to 5% by 2012.
Concerning the remaining categories, Japan had the highest export share, at over 25%, which was double that of the US in the first year. It then fell gradually to about 16% in 2012. The figure for the US, meanwhile, experienced a dramatic decline from over 10% to 5% between 1990 and 2010 before finishing at approximately 8% in 2012.
