The line graphs illustrate the percentages of people using public and private transport in five Australian cities – Sydney, Perth, Adelaide, Canberra, and Melbourne – between 2000 and 2010.
Overall, the proportion of people using private transport was significantly higher than that of public transport in all cities, and both figures generally showed an upward trend over the period. Additionally, Melbourne and Sydney consistently recorded the highest usage rates, while Canberra had the lowest.
In terms of public transport, Melbourne had the highest proportion, rising slightly from around 20% in 2000 to a peak of approximately 22% in 2003, before declining to about 19% in 2010. Sydney followed a similar pattern, increasing from roughly 15% to 18% in 2006, then falling slightly by the end of the period. Adelaide and Perth showed moderate fluctuations, while Canberra remained the lowest, with figures hovering between 5% and 7%.
Regarding private transport, all cities experienced steady growth. Melbourne again led, increasing from about 15% in 2000 to around 20% in 2010. Sydney also rose consistently, from approximately 10% to 14%. Perth and Adelaide showed gradual increases, while Canberra, despite having the lowest figures, still grew from around 3% to 6% over the decade.
