The maps illustrate the transformation in part of the Poulton town taking place during 1900 and 1935.
Overall, this town has shifted from an industry-based settlement into a residential area. Additionally, the remarkable changes include the demolition of many industrial facilities, the construction of flats and mansions, the expansion of shops, and the relocation of some daily-need stores.
Regarding the year 1900, there were a number of terraced houses across Trent and Bayley Street located in the left and centre of the town respectively. Moreover, an adjacent shop and laundry were next to the above terraced houses on Bayley Street, while a cafe was situated on the opposite side. Besides, a huge factory was positioned in the North Centre of Poulton whereas railway workers’ cottages were beneath the central road. Noticeably, many tracts of land were vacant at the time and there was a railway line passing through the town in 1900.
Turning to the remaining year, the terraced houses in Trent Street were knocked down to make room for two new apartment buildings. Furthermore, the factory and wasteland in the North were converted into mansions right next to the location of the relocated laundry and cafe. More shops had been erected in a new road named New Lane at the expense of the workers’ cottages in the South East of Poulton. Notably, Bayley Street Park was constructed in the heart of the town with many spacious areas and trees which enabled the town to build a children’s play area positioned in the under left corner of the park. Finally, the railway line completely disappeared during this year.
