The two maps illustrate the layout of a university library in 2005 and how it appears today after modernization. Overall, while the bookshelves remained intact, the library was significantly reconfigured to support individual learning and digital access, resulting in the disappearance of several traditional elements.
In 2005, there were bookshelves lining the top, bottom, and left sides of the room. In the centre, there were four communal study tables, while on the right-hand side, desks with computers were available for student use. The bottom right corner featured a library office, and next to it was a staffed desk for book borrowing and returns.
By contrast, today, the central area has been completely redesigned, where the study tables once stood, there are now private study desks, providing more individualized space. On the left, the bookshelves were removed, and in their place are two automated book borrowing stations, which resulted in the disappearance of the manned desk. The library office has also been removed and made way for desks for student laptops, now located in the southeast corner. Meanwhile, the original bookshelves on the top wall remained intact, although those at the bottom and left sides were taken out.
While the shelves along the top wall remained unchanged, most other facilities were either relocated or replaced to modernize the space. These developments reflect a shift toward self-service and personal device use, rather than shared and staffed services.
