The two bar charts illustrate the number of people in Europe who were affected by four different types of noise pollution ( traffic, trains, aircraft, and industry) in cities and rural areas during the day and night in 2007.
Overall, noise pollution caused by traffic was the most common problem in both cities and rural area, while noise form industry and aircraft showed negligible numbers.
In terms of the highest, noise from traffic recorded by far the largest number of people in cities, at 68 million during the day and 48 million at night. Similarly, in rural areas this category stood at 35 million and 24 million respectively. In stark contrast, trains affected around 10 million and 8 million in cities, compared to rural areas where 8 million of people were suffered during the day and 6 million at night.
Regarding the lowest, around 4 million and 1 million of people suffered from aircraft noise in urban areas, while 2 million and 1 million were in rural areas. Industrial noise affected a relatively small number of people in cities, at 1 million and 0.25 million respectively. Meanwhile, there were no people affected nt industrial noise in rural areas.
