In 1994,Australian residents made approximately 1.3 million overseas trips,compared with about 1 million visits to Australia by overseas residents.The number of outbound trips rose steadily throughout the period,reaching around 1.9 million in 1999 and 3.2 million in 2004.The figure continued to rise to 4.4 million in 2009 before peaking at about 5 million in 2014.By contrast,inbound tourism grew at a slower pace.After remaining stable at around 1 million between 1994 and 1999.In 2004 the number of visits to Australia increased to approximately 1.7 million,2.1 million in 2009 and finally 2.5 million in 2014.
Comparing information about countries visited by Australians in 2014,Indonesia ranked first with about 1 million visitors.The USA was second most popular destination,attracting roughly 900,000 Australian travellers.Italy accounted for around 400,000 visits,while Lapan received approximately 300,000.The UK was the least visited country,with just under 250,000 Australian tourists.
