The graphs demonstrate the proportion of European residents who suffered by noise caused by four types of polluters – traffic, trains, aircraft, and industry – in 2007, separated by day and night across cities and rural areas, measured in millions. Overall, the most people affected by noise of traffic regardless the place where they lived, while industry was the category which disturbed the lowest number of people. In addition, in all categories, the number of people affected during the day exceeded those affected at night
In cities, the most individuals exposed to noise compare to rural areas. Traffic noise affected 68 millions of people during the day and 48 millions of people at night, making it the main distributor. Trains influenced 10 million people during daytime while at night it dropped to 8 million, followed closely by aircraft with 4 million and a million throughout the day and at night, respectively. Only a million people during the day and a quarter of a million citizens at night got an impact from industry.
As for rural areas, the same pattern can be seen for them, too. Traffic influanced 35 millions of people during daylight whereas less people, 24 million, affected the hours of darkness. The figures for trains at night and day time quite close with respective 6 million and 8 million numbers, followed distantly by aircraft whose daylight figure (2 million) was twofold higher than nigh-time – a million. Meanwhile, there are not any residents who influenced by industry during both day and night time in countrysides.
