The two maps illustrate the layout of a museum in 1998 and show the significant modifications that were made ten years later, in 2008.
Overall, the museum underwent several major internal and external renovations, with the main central garden area being redesigned and several facilities being relocated, converted, or added. The Permanent Exhibition Rooms remained largely untouched, keeping their location in the eastern and western wings.
In the 1998 plan, the entrance led directly into the TICKETS Entrance/Exit area, which was flanked by a Shop to the south and a WC and Bags & Coats storage to the north. By 2008, this entire area had been reorganised. The Bags & Coats facility was moved to the south-western corner, next to the Temporary Exhibition Room, while the Shop remained in the south but was relocated slightly west. The central entrance now directly leads to the ticket area, which is situated adjacent to a new Fountains feature in the garden.
Looking at the northern part of the museum, the Cafe from 1998 was significantly expanded and converted into a Restaurant in the north-western corner. The old Cafe’s spot was retained as a smaller Cafe with a new Cafe sitting area added to the south of it. Furthermore, the central Garden was reduced in size to accommodate these new features and had Fountains installed in the middle. The WC was also moved from the north-east corner to a position beside the new Cafe.
