The pie charts and table illustrate the proportions of seafood imported into the UK from Poland, Sweden and Germany, as well as the total value of seafood imports in 1987, 1997 and 2007.
Overall, Sweden overtook Poland as the largest exporter of seafood to the UK, while Germany’s share increased slightly but remained the smallest throughout the period. In contrast, the total value of seafood imports increased considerably between 1987 and 2007.
Looking at Poland and Sweden, Poland accounted for 65% of seafood exports to the UK in 1987, which was 37 percentage points higher than Sweden’s figure of 28%. However, Sweden gradually increased its share of exports and overtook Poland in 1997. By 2007, Sweden had become the leading exporter, accounting for 43% of seafood imports to the UK. In contrast, Poland’s share declined significantly from 65% to 30% over the period, representing a decrease of 35% percentage points. At the same time, the total value increased from 7.40 to 12.30 million dollars.
As for Germany, the export rate of the seafood was initially 7%, and started trading more to constitute 25% in 1997. Notably, Germany’s share rose by 2%, showing 27% in 2007, despite remained the smallest exporter among the three countries throughout the period.
