The bar graph illustrates the main reason why students chose a particular university in the UK, between 1997 and 2007.
Overall, it is clear that students’ priorities changed significantly. Precisely, areas suitable for degree courses, close to parental home and close to quality of teaching increased, while the reverse of this was true for quality of resources and good sports and social activities.
With regard to the increases first, demand for studying close to parental home rose rapidly, which was 10% in 1987 and became 22% by 2007. Other universities, such as suitable degree courses and quality of teaching grew slightly to about 2% to 3%, by the end of the period.
When it comes to decreases, the highest category(19%) that dropped extremely was good sports and social activities, which was not a reason for pupils to choose this figure and it fell to 6%. Section quality of resources also experienced a minor decline which was 21% in 2007 and 17% by the end of the period
