The pie charts illustrate different sources for energy consumed by Australia in 2008 and estimations for 2030.
Overall, coal, gas, and oil were the dominant sources of energy in 2008. By 2030, while fossil fuels will continue to play a major role, renewable energy sources are expected to gain a slightly larger share. Notably, solar power will be replaced by geothermal energy.
In 2008, coal made up the largest share at 39%, followed by oil and gas with 32.5% and 22.9%, respectively. In contrast, The remaining sources contributed minimal proportions, with other fuels making up 3.8%, and hydro, solar, and wind together accounting for less than 2%.
Regarding the predictions for 2030, coal will experience a significant decrease in terms of usage, declining to 27%. A similar pattern can be seen in the figure for other types of fuel, as this sector will decline by 0.2%, to a lesser extent than coal. In sharp contrast, gas and oil utilization will witness an increase to 32% and 35.5%, respectively. The solar sector is removed and replaced by geothermal, taking up 4.3%. Finally, although wind and hydro will be used on a much larger scale when compared with 2008, they still will take up only around 0.9% each.
