The pie charts provide information about the various sources of teenagers’ expenditures in Japan and Australia in 2019.
Overall, it is clear that video and computer games were the most popular consumer item among Japanese teens, whereas Australian youngsters spent the largest proportion of their money on food in that year.
In both countries, three categories, namely games, food and clothing, accounted for the majority of spending by teenagers. In Japan, 37% of their money went towards computer games and 22% to food. These figures were reversed in Australia where teenagers spent 37% on food and 22% on gaming. Food represented the third biggest chunk of spending, accounting for exactly one-fifth of Japanese teens’ expenditure and a quarter of Australians’.
A much smaller proportion of the teenagers’ monetary expenditure was spent on books in both nations. In Japan, they spent 9% of their money on these, which was just 1% higher than Aussie teens. The remaining amount was spent on miscellaneous goods.
