The pie chart given compares five different kinds of books based on the percentage of books sold by a bookseller between 1972 and 2012, at 20-year intervals.
Looking at the illustration, it is immediately evident that Adult fiction and Children’s fiction showed an increase in the ratio of books sold, whereas the opposite was true for Biography and Others, except for Travel, because this type of book had drastic changes. Additionally, Biography books were consistently the sector with the lowest proportion of books sold by a bookseller in most years.
In 1972, Other books dominated the chart with a quarter of all books surveyed selling in this field, compared to 20% of books sold in each category: Biography, Adult fiction, and Children’s fiction. By the year 1992, Adult fiction books had overtaken Others and ranked first out of the five.
In 2012, after some fluctuations, the part of Adult fiction books experienced exponential growth and reached a peak at 45%. An opposite pattern could be seen in the figures for Biography, Travel, and Others, which significantly declined to 8%, 10%, and 12%, respectively. Meanwhile, the figure for Children’s fiction books grew slowly to 25%.
