The given pie charts offer insights into how much of five different genres of books, namely adult fiction, children’s fiction, biography, travel and the others, accounted for the sales of a bookseller throughout a 40-year period.
Overall, at the start of the period, five types of book contributed quite evenly to the number of books that were sold. However, at the end of the period, the percentage of adult fiction sold underwent a significant rise and become the most popular genre.
To begin with, in 1972, adult fiction, children’s fiction and biography each made up 20% of the sales, which is 5% higher than the figure for travel book and 5% lower than the figure for other genres of books. However, this distribution rapidly changed since in the next 40 years, the percentage of sales made by both types of fiction experienced an increase without fluctuation. The figure for adult fiction surged to 45% and the figure for children’s fiction only went up marginally to 25%, which solidified these 2 genres as the most popular genres in comparison the the others.
On the other hand, a decrease can be observed in the proportion of travelling books and also biographic books. Despite the slight increase in 1972, the percentage of travel books sold were eventually fell and stood at 10% in 2012. Similarly, biographic contribution to the total sales considerably declined but without fluctuations, to 8% in the end. Other genres of books, therefore, also dropped to 12% of total sales in the end.
