The pie charts compare the distribution of household expenditure across six categories in a European country in 1990 and 2020.
Overall, food and housing accounted for the largest shares of household expenditure in both years, while “other” remained the smallest category. Over the period, spending patterns changed across the categories.
There was a significant increase in housing expenditure in 2020 compared to 1990, rising by 10 percentage points. Similarly, transport showed a moderate rise of around 5%, while spending on entertainment also increased by 5% over the period.
In contrast, food expenditure recorded a sharp decline of 15 percentage points, despite being the dominant category in 1990. Clothing also decreased slightly by 5%. Meanwhile, the proportion spent on the “other” category remained unchanged at 5% in both years.
