The charts provide information about the proportions of films that won Oscars in six different genres between 2003 and 2008.
Overall, although there was a slight decline in thriller movies, it accounted for the larger share both years. Meanwhile, documentaries and horror became more popular, others witnessed only minor changes.
In 2003, the figure of the thriller genre made up almost half of the percentage of Oscar-winning films. Though this figure dropped slightly by 7%, that kind of film remained the most favoured genre. In contrast, documentaries experienced a marginal rise of 4%, while romance maintained the same level in both years.
Among the less popular genres, action was the most favoured at 12% despite its moderate fall of 1% in 2008, followed by a similar proportion for science fiction, which slightly rose with 11%. However, horror movies grew from 7% to 10% whereas the percentage of comedy movies remained the least common genres, unchanged at 3%.
