The three pie charts show the proportions of four types of vehicles used in the UK in 1965, 1985, and 2005.
Overall, private cars accounted for the largest share in all three years, while recreational vehicles consistently represented the smallest proportion. Private car usage rose steadily over time, whereas the share of lorries and recreational vehicles declined.
In 1965, private cars made up 40% of all vehicles, followed by public transport at 25%. Lorries and other commercial vehicles accounted for 20%, while recreational vehicles made up the remaining 15%. By 1985, the percentage of private cars had increased significantly to 55%. Public transport and lorries both fell slightly to 20%, and recreational vehicles dropped sharply to just 5%.
In 2005, private cars rose further to 60%, maintaining their dominant position. Public transport increased moderately to 22%. However, lorries decreased slightly to 18%, and recreational vehicles remained the smallest category, rising only to 10%.
