Overall, environmental and sport organizations experienced a significant increase in the proportion of volunteers over the period. In contrast, the percentages for art, educational, and other organizations declined, while the figure for health care rose only slightly. Additionally, environmental organizations became the most popular sector by 2014.
In 2008, educational organizations accounted for the largest share of volunteers at 24%. This was followed by environmental groups, which represented 21% of the total. Meanwhile, art organizations made up 18%. Both sport and other organizations had an equal proportion of volunteers, each comprising 15%, whereas health care had the smallest percentage at only 7%.
By 2014, the distribution had changed noticeably. The proportion of volunteers working in environmental organizations rose considerably to 29%, making it the largest category. Similarly, the figure for sport organizations increased substantially from 15% to 25%. In contrast, participation in educational organizations declined to 17%, while the percentage for art organizations fell to 12%. The share for other organizations also dropped significantly to 9%, whereas health care experienced a slight rise to 8%.
