The table and bar chart illustrate how average journey times in a city centre changed after improvements to the transport network, and compare the average cost per kilometre of four forms of transport.
Overall, journey times decreased for public transport, while they increased for private vehicles. In terms of cost, taxis were by far the most expensive option, whereas buses were the cheapest.
Before the improvements, buses had the longest average journey time at 28 minutes, followed by trams at 22 minutes. After the changes, both became faster, with bus journeys falling to 23 minutes and tram journeys to 16 minutes. In contrast, travel times for taxis and cars increased. Taxi journeys rose from 9 to 12 minutes, while car journeys increased from 10 to 15 minutes.
Regarding costs, taxis were the most costly at approximately €1.80 per kilometre. Cars were the second most expensive at around €1.00. By comparison, trams and buses were much cheaper, costing about €0.50 and €0.40 per kilometre respectively.
In summary, the improvements mainly benefited public transport users in terms of time, while taxis remained the most expensive mode of travel.
