Overall, it can be seen that males in the UK significantly outperformed females in terms of consuming cigarettes or cigar as their consumption pattern remained consistent till 1980. Afterwards, a sharp decline was noticed, while number of female smokers gradually increased in the given period.
It is clear that more than 70% of male population was smokers in 1950, this trend remained consistent for almost 30 years till 1980. However, after 1980, a unique trend emerged as percentage of men smoking cigarettes drastically declined to all time low of just above 40%.
On the other hand, in 1980 only 20% of female population were found smoking, this proportion consistently increased to its peak at 60% in 1980. Furthermore, this upward trend was short-lived as its proportion decreased to just above 30% by the end of 1990.
