Data on rail transport usage in Malaysia, Canada, China, and the UAE in 2007 covering the number of users, passenger kilometers per head, and the amount of cargo transported is illustrated by table below.
Overall, China had the highest number for both columns of rail passengers and passenger kilometers per head, while Canada transported the largest amount of cargo. In contrast, Canada had the lowest number of passengers and passenger kilometres.
China dominated in terms of rail transport usage, with 27 million passengers and an average of 1,980 passenger kilometers per person. Malaysia followed with 5.9 million passengers and 770 passenger kilometers per head, slightly ahead of the UAE, which recorded 5.5 million passengers and 780 passenger kilometers. Canada, however, had only 0.3 million rail passengers, with each individual traveling an average of 80 kilometers by rail.
In terms of cargo transportation, Canada led with 28.2 billion tons, followed by China at 23.01 billion tons. Malaysia and the UAE were close in this category, carrying 22.2 and 21.9 billion tons of cargo, respectively.
