The provided table compares the figures about students studying in six departments, including English, Modern Languages, History, Physics, Math, and Chemistry in an Australian university in 2009.
Overall, it is evident that females in three departments, namely English, Modern languages, and History stayed dominant, while the opposite was true for other departments. In addition, the percentage of students having a first language not English and being born outside Australian made up nearly a half over departments, except Modern Language.
In term of the proportion of female students, social science subjects were the most preferred ones of female students, namely English departments made up the highest percentage, with 67%, Modern Language and History, with 63% and 58%, respectively, while female students specializing in natural science subjects had the less percentage, with Physics and Math, 37% and 42%, respectively, and with the lowest ones in Chemistry, with 29%.
Regarding First language not English, one can see that the Modern Languages department accounted for the highest rate having students whose first language was not English, with 41%, whereas English and History departments saw by far the less rate, 16% and 10%, respectively. It is noticeable that Physics, Math, and Chemistry stayed the middle standing, ranging from 32% to 38%.
Considering students were born outside Australia, overseas students studying in the modern languages department also reached the highest rate at 54%. Followed by the natural science subjects, namely physics with 44%, math with 43%, and chemistry with 47%, while history and english had the low rate compared other departments, with 18% and 27%, respectively.
