The table below gives information about the percentage of the workforce employed in six industries in Australia between 1989 and 2009. Overall, the percentage of the workforce in four industries (Tourism, Education, Construction, and Health care) had a noticeable rise, although that for Health care became the highest factor of the workforce in Australia in 2009. Notably, there was a slight drop in the figure for the workforce in Retail. That for Manufacturing received the best place in the first year, while it experienced a sharp downward trend, being overtaken by that for Health care.
Looking at the table in more detail, the figure for the workforce employed in Health care accounted for 9.6% in the first year, although it increased significantly, maintaining its lead with 11.3%. In terms of Education and Tourism, they increased slightly, with the former rising from 6.8% to 7.5% by the end of 2009, while the latter rose from 5.5% to 7.3%.
As for Construction, it also saw growth, increasing from 7.6% in 1989 to 8.3% in 2009. The percentage of the workforce employed in Manufacturing and Retail went down, with the former accounting for 15% in 1989, decreasing to 9.8%, while the latter dropped to 10.1% in 2009 from 11.8% in 1989.
