The table provides information about the proportion of workforce employed in six industries (Tourism, education, construction, health care, retail and manufacturing) in Australia from 1989 and 2009.
Overall, the figures for almost all industries followed an upward trend, except retail and manufacturing. It is also worth to note that the proportion of health care industry became the most dominant over the period, despite manufacturing was the most significant in 1989.
Initially, health care industry ranked third with 9.6%. By 2009, the figure for health care increased notably by 1.7%, making it the most prominent. Meanwhile, the percentage of workforce in tourism rose noticeably from 5.5% to 7.3%.
Similarly, the figures for construction and education experienced a moderate growth from 7.6 and 6.8 to 8.3 and 7.5, respectively.
In contrast, although manufacturing accounted for the largest share of 15% in 1989, the figure of this industry declined dramatically to 9.8%. Retail made up 11.8%, ranking second, but the proportion of this section dropped notably to 10.1% over the period.
