Overall, while Europe had the highest percentage of people aged 60 and above in its population in 2000, the reverse was true for Africa in the same period. Additionally, it is expected that by 2050, this figure will experience an upward trend across all regions and in the world total.
Starting at 22% in 2000, the percentage of above 60 years old adults in Europe was nearly twofold that of Asia, the second highest figure (at 12%). In 2050, these figures are predicted to increase significantly by 9% in Europe and 16% in Asia. The proportion of North America and Oceania both stood at 11% in 2000; however, these figures are estimated to raise to 26% and 22%, respectively.
Ranging from 5% to 7%, the percentage of Latin America and Africa were the lowest among the regions in 2000. Follow other regions’ patterns, these figures are expected to go up, reaching 18% and 12%, respectively, in 2050. Finally, while the total proportion of people in the above 60 group was 13% in 2000, it will rise to 24% as predicted in 2050.
