The table shows, by different modes of transport, the average number of kilometers an adult spent in the capital of a certain European country in 1997 and 2007.
Overall, it is clear that cars were used more frequently than any other type of transport, whereas the distance traveled by bus, bicycle, motorcycle, and walking decreased over time.
Car travel was by far the most common means of transport in both years, with an average of 3500 kilometers per person in 1977 and 7100 kilometers in 2007, respectively. Although the distance traveled by train was significantly behind, it accounted for the second most used mode of transport in both 1977 and 2007, with 900 kilometers and 1000 kilometers, respectively. Travel by taxi also increased, doubling and reaching an average distance of 800 kilometers per person by 2007.
However, the average distance that people walked showed a decline, as well as the number of kilometers people spent by bus, both declining by 100 kilometers by 2007. Travel by bicycle and motorcycle also fell, but less significantly, each declining by only 10 kilometers.
