The table illustrates data for the subway systems in six major cities of the world.
Overall, the underground railway system constructed prior to 1950s operates over longer routes and are used by a huge number of travellers. Whereas systems bult post 1950 cover shorter length and carry fewer passengers.
The London underground railway was commensed in 1863 and has a operational length of 394km, it carries around 775 million passengers a year. On similar lines, Paris and Tokyo started their subways in 1900 and 1927 respectively. Tokyo’s system covers a length of 155km which is just 44km short of Paris, but carries approximately double the number of passengers.
On the other hand, Washington DC, Kyoto and Los Angeles have opened their underground metro systems in 1976, 1981 and 2001 respectively which is fairly recent compared to others. Washinton DC’s system covers a length of 126 km which is far more than Kyoto’s 11km and Los Angeles’s 28km, also it handeles approximately tripe the number of passengers per year with respect to Kyoto and Los Angeles which stand around 50 million.
