The table illustrates details about the date opened, kilometers of route and passengers per year for the underground railway systems of six cities (London, Paris, Tokyo, Washington DC, Kyoto and Los Angeles.
Overall, London has the oldest metro while also having the most extensive length of routes. Kyoto on the other hand has the least length of rails, around 35 times less than that of London. Tokyo has by far the most annual passengers, while Kyoto has the least.
The cities of London, Paris and Tokyo have the oldest underground railway systems, that opened in 1863, 1900 and 1927 respectively. Furthermore, these cities have the most extensive network of routes with Tokyo having 155 kilometers of rails, Paris 199 and London almost double that of Paris. On the same note, Tokyo has 1927 million passengers every year, Paris has 736 million less than Tokyo and London 775 million.
On the other hand, the three remaining cities have the newest stations, with Washington opening in 1976 with 126 kilometers of route, Kyoto 5 years later with only 11 kilometers and Los Angeles in 2001 with about double the length of Kyoto. Los Angeles and Kyoto have a similar number of annual passengers (50 and 45 million respectively), while Washington has three times the traffic of Los Angeles.
