The table illustrates information on consumer expenditure in three different categories in five European countries – Ireland, Italy, Spain, Sweden, and Turkey – in 2002.
Overall, the most amount of money was spent on the “Food/Drinks and Tabacco” category, “Clothing/Footwear” was ranked second, whereas spending on leisure and education did not exceed more than 4 percent.
Ireland and Turkey were the countries with the highest expenditure in the Food/Drink/Tobacco category with 28.91% and 32.14%, respectively. Next on the list was Spain with its figure reaching 18.8%. Italy and Sweden had a little difference in expenditures with figures for Italy accounting for 16.36% and Sweden for 15.77%, last being the least on spending in this category.
The maximum amount of money(9%) spent on the “Clothing and Footwear” category was observed in Italy. Ireland, Spain, and Turkey had almost the same percentage within 6% each. The least interested in that category was Sweden with its 5.4% consumer spending rate.
All five countries were least interested in leisure and Education. To illustrate, the largest percentage was only 4.35% in Turkey. Italy and Sweden spent 3.20% and 3.22% respectively. Ireland’s figures accounted only for 2.21%, and a mere rate of 1.98% was observed in Spain.
