Overall, Great barrier Reef recorded the highest number of visitors across all the years, whereas Macquarie Island received the least number of tourists.
To begin, Great Barrier Reef registered 1,670,000 visitors in 1996 then saw a dramatic increase to close to 3,000,000 number of visitors in the year 1998. In 2000, the number slightly increased by approximately 200,000. Central Eastern Rainforest Reserve started off with 810,000 visitors. Subsequently, a constant decline of 20,000 across the years to 770,000 visitors in 2000. Blue Mountains began the period with 526,000 visitors and experienced a gradual increase to slightly more than 580,000 visitors in 2000.
Tasmania Wilderness reported 450,000 visitors in the year 1996, afterwards a slight increase in the figures to about 480,000 visitors in 2000. Shark Bay recorded 84,000 visitors in 1996. Thereafter, a drastic rise to slightly more than 100,000 in 1998 then finally a decline to less than 90,000 in 2000. Initially, Macquarie Island received 350 visitors then the number plummeted to 310 and finally a modest rise to 330 in the years 1996, 1998 and 2000 respectively.
