The table illustrates the employment rates of men and women in six sectors in New Zealand in 1993 and 2003.
Overall, IT had the highest proportion of male employees in both years, while services recorded the lowest figure among men. In contrast, services accounted for the highest percentage of female workers, whereas IT had the lowest employment rate for women.
Looking at male employment, most sectors experienced a slight decline over the period. In 1993, IT recorded the highest figure at 80%, although this number decreased to 70% in 2003. Similarly, manufacturing, construction, and farming also fell moderately by 2003. In contrast, services had the lowest proportion at 14% in 1993 but increased dramatically to 40% in 2003. Commerce also showed a modest rise, growing from 45% to 50% during the ten-year period.
For women, employment increased in several sectors between 1993 and 2003. Manufacturing, construction, and IT all experienced gradual growth, while farming rose from 25% to 35% by 2003. However, the proportion of women working in commerce declined slightly from 55% to 50%. Likewise, the percentage of female employees in services fell significantly from 85% to 60% over the same period.
