Overall, the population of New Zealand has gone up. Over the span of one year, the country’s younger population has fallen slightly, while the number of adults has gone up.
Two age groups have shown a decline in their populations. Both under 15 and 15-39 age groups experienced a 0.2% decline. In 2011; 898,160 people were under 15, and this number fell to 896,364 in 2012. The group aged 15-39 fell from 1,577,256 to 1,574,102 in that period.
Age groups 40-64 and 65+ have increased in 2012, experiencing a 0.6% and 4.0% rise respectively. The population of 40-64 year olds was 1,331,907 in 2011 which grew to 1,339,898 in 2012. Elderly people, aged 65+ have also gone up in 2012. In fact, this group recorded the most significant rise, from 573,946 in 2011 to 596,903 in 2012. As a result, the total population of New Zealand also increased during the time span, from 4,381,269 to 4,410,284.
