The table displays the changes in several household types in Canada from 1984 to 2020.
Looking from an overall point of view, the percentages of people with no children, dependent children, non-dependent children, and lone parent in Canada were fluctuating in the given period.
It is seen from the table that the peak percentage of one-family household with no children was in 2014 and 2020, and was 25 percent. In comparison with 2014, in 1984 the percentage of couple with no children was 6 percent less, and equal to 19 percent. The percentage of couple with dependent children reached its peak of 52 percent in 1984. However, by 2020 the percentage significantly decreased and was equal to 36 percent.
The percentage of households with one person was approximately equal to the percentage of households with only parent from 1984 to 2020. Nevertheless, the percentage of households with one person was slightly higher in the period from 1984 to 2004.
