In 1996, Sydney had the highest proportion of public transport users at 23%, which rose to 26% in 2006. Similarly, showed an increase from 14% to 17%, equivalent to a 21% growth. Brisbane had a notable rise of 33%, from 12% in 1996 to 16% in 2006. Meanwhile, Perth’s percentage increased from 13% to 15%, with a 16% growth, and Melbourne rose from 11% to 12%, making a modest increase of 9%.
In contrast, Hobart and Canberra experienced declines. Hobart’s figure dropped from 11% in 1996 to 9% in 2006, a decrease of 18%, while Canberra recorded the most dramatic reduction, falling from 12% to 8%, a significant 33% decline.
