The table illustrates the proportion of adults in seven Australia cities using public transportation to go to work in 1996 and 2006.
Overall, the highest figures belonged to Sydney in both years. In addition, while Hobart and Canberra saw a decrease in the percentage of employees going to work by public transportation, the opposite was true for these of the remaining.
Rank at first position in both years was Sydney, at 23% and 26%. 14% and 17% employees in Adelaide commuted to work by public transportation in 1996 and 2006, saw a 21% rise. Next, Melbourne allocated 11% in the percentage of workers using public transportation in 1996 and slightly increased to 12% in 2006. The figures for employees choosing public transportation to commute to work was 13% in 1996 and went up to 15% in 2006.
Regarding Canberra and Hobart, both cities witnessed a significant decrease, from 12% to 8% and 11% to 9%. Meanwhile, Brisbane experienced a dramatic increase in the proportion of workers using public transportation to go to work in 1996 and 2006, from 12% to 16%.
