The table illustrates different economic sectors in three countries in 2000 and the growth rate of energy consumption compared with the year 1999
Overall, the US took the lead in the energy consumption. But the fastest growth rate of energy use belonged to Japan
Looking first at the industry field, the US kept the lion’share in the amount of oil use(420 million tons), its growth rate was a modest 0.9%. Even though Japan’s industry consumed 159 million tons but its rate of increase was an impressive 39%. Compared with its counterparts, Australia had the lowest demand with 36 million tons registered. However, its rate of increase was higher than that of US.
Turning to the transport sector, the US continued being the leading energy consumer, whose consumption was indicated at 565 units ( in millions of tons of oil equivalents). Despite showing a 22% increase, the US could not rival Japan and Australia (52% and 23% respectively). Besides, Japan’s transport demanded 96 million tons but its rate of increase was a significant 52% compared to the growth rate of increase in Australia had the lowest quantity of oil consumption, with only 25 million tons. In other areas, the US still took the lead in energy consumption, followed by Japan with 148 million tons and Australia’s demand being last (31 million tons). However, the japanese kept the lion’s share in the rate of increase (46%), the same happened to the us and Australia in the other industries. In total, with 1420 million tons of oil equivalent, the US outnumbered Japan and Australia in energy consumption. But regarding the rate of increase, the US and Australia far lagged behind Japan
