The table compares four free-time activities in terms of the proportion of adults who were engaged in them in urban and rural areas in 1990 and 2010. Overall, reading was by far the most common activity in both areas in both years. It is also clear that reading and photography increased in popularity during the whole period, while animated games and playing either declined or remained stable.
An upward trend was observed in the percentage of adults who took part in reading and photography. In 1990, 61% of urban adults and 71% of rural adults read books. By 2010, these figures had increased to 78% in both areas. Photography also saw an increase, rising from 7% to 17% in cities and from 14% to 24% in the countryside.
By contrast, animated games and playing showed either a fall or remained stable. For playing, the figure for rural areas remained stable at 26% in both years; however, in urban areas, it declined from 21% to 14%. Meanwhile, in cities, animated games remained stable at 10%, while in rural areas, it decreased from 18% to 14%.
