The given table compares the proportion of city and countryside adults in terms of their participation in four different leisure activities, namely reading, animated play, playing and photography in both 1990 and 2010.
Overall, it can be seen clearly from the table that rural adults had the same or higher percentages than their urban counterparts in every activity. Regardless of the region, the proportion of reading was always the most popular activity, whereas animated plays which became the least favored by the end of survey.
Looking at reading and photography, in 1990, reading attracted most people’s choice during leisure time, participated by 71% in rural and 61% in urban adults, respectively. However, taking photos was the least popular pastime, as only 14% of rural residents did so, double the figure for those in cities. After twenty years, the figure of reading had surged in urban areas to 78%, matching that of rural areas, still maintaining its dominance. Similarly, the proportion of individuals taking photos also increased by 10% in 2010.
In contrast, the popularity of animated play remained stable in countryside areas with nearly 10%, while that of in the city region, starting at 18% and declining gradually by 4% in 2010, becoming the least welcome activity. It is noticeable that playing was less favored in urban areas, dropping from 21% to 14%, whereas rural participation remained unchanged at 26% in both years.
