The table illustrates the proportion of households that had Internet access in five different countries in 2000 and 2010.
Overall, Internet availability rose significantly in all countries over the decade. While Australia consistently held the highest percentage of connected households, the UK experienced the most dramatic growth.
In 2000, Internet penetration was relatively modest across all nations, ranging from 35% in the UK to 50% in Australia. Canada and the USA had similar figures, at 48% and 44% respectively, while Germany stood at 39%.
By 2010, however, the proportion of households with online connectivity had increased sharply. Australia remained at the top with 88%, closely followed by Canada at 85%. The UK showed remarkable progress, climbing from the lowest point in 2000 (35%) to 82% in 2010, surpassing both the USA (78%) and Germany
(79%).
