The table compares the proportion of male and female employee working across different areas of employment in a particular country in 1986, 1996 and 2006.
Overall, there were several notable changes. While the percentages of women and men working in banking and education increased, the figures for manufacturing industry in both genders decreased. In addition, catering area experienced a quiet opposite trend, with the percentages of men growing and women’s staying unchanged over the years.
The proportion of men employment in banking rose dramatically from 11% in 1986 to 20% in 1996 and slightly (21%) in 2006. Similarly, in education the percentages of male employees represented a gradual increase from 13% to 14% and 15% in given years. In comparison, there were a noticeable rise in the figures of women working in banking (from 12% in 1986 to 16% in 1996 and 19% in 2006. In education, even though it showed the highest figures among employment areas and genders, the proportion of female employees climbed from 33% in 1986 to 35% in 1996, before reaching to 38% in 2006.
By contrast, in manufacturing industry, the figures for both male and female workers fell substantially from 32% to 21% and 17%, and from 18% to 12% and 6%, respectively in three given years. The catering category witnessed a sharp increase initially from 16% in 1986 to 22% in 1996, before remaining stable at 22% in the final year. Meanwhile, the proportion of women working in catering area stayed same at exact 26% throughout the period.
